HTC gave us a quick session to play around with its latest handset, the Desire C. No, it’s not part of the consolidated One series, nor is the company revealing precisely what that “C” stands for — heaven forfend it’s “cheap.” While a humble 320 x 480 touchscreen and 600MHz processor might not set many smartphone obsessives’ hearts a’ racing, it still manages to eke out a HTC Sense-skinned Android 4.0 UI — no mere feat, in our opinion. A 5-megapixel camera and expandable microSD slot are some other welcome specifications and it’s all wrapped up in an attractive matte finish — you can take your pick form black and white in the UK. Specifications of the next rumoured HTC Android device have now been leaked online. The details are for the HTC Ville C, which looks to showcase a new version of the Sense UI.

The new HTC Ville C appears to be a more affordable version of the One S, with the new device featuring the same eight-megapixel camera as in the One S.

Differing from the One S, the Ville C will feature a single-core 1.2GHz Snapdragon S3 chip, as opposed to the 1.5GHz S4 monster, found in its bigger brother.

Described as being an “ultra-slim PDA phone”, sources are proclaiming the HTC Ville C to be a cheaper alternative to the HTC One S, which itself was called the HTC Ville in pre-production.

Whether it will have quite the same venom in terms of speed as the One S we will have to wait and see, but with regard to processing power we’re looking at a Qualcomm MSM8260 dual-core 1.7GHz chipset.

Something that is worth noting is that the leaked document also suggests the phone will run on HTC Sense 4.5. No word on what this upgrade might bring, but we were rather taken with 4.0 so a tweak here or there could make for an even better UI experience.

Of course, first impressions are dangerous, but we get the feeling they will prove decisive when it comes to another recent device from Samsung, the Galaxy S Advance.

It comes with a dual core 1Ghz processor, which is respectable when quad cores have only really started to arrive in recent times. It also boasts 768MB of RAM to ensure it’s a smooth operator.

There’s no word on whether the Advance will get updated to Android 4.0, which is quite disconcerting especially given the launch of HTC’s Desire C – a budget smartphone that ships with Android 4.0.

More details have emerged on the HTC Desire C, the forthcoming budget Ice Cream Sandwich phone. It’s been tested and benchmarked to see if a low-specced affordable phone can cope with the demands of up-to-date Android.

Inside the Desire C is a 600MHz Qualcomm Snapdragon processor and Adreno 200 graphics chip. It’s possibly the lowest-specced phone to run Ice Cream Sandwich, even leading us to wonder whether it could properly handle ICS at all.

One reason we’re interested in the new Desire’s performance is its similarity, on paper, to last year’s HTC Wildfire S. They both pack a 600MHz processor and 512MB of RAM, so it’s an opportunity to see whether newer really is better, all else being roughly equal.

But let’s not let this brief moment of etymological confusion get in the way of our quick play with HTC’s latest smartphone.
